CHILDREN AND MEDICATION

I recently watched a documentary on television about children and medications that were prescribed for their ailments. In most of the cases, none of the children got better. As a matter of fact, over 80% of them had two to three side effects as well. I am appalled at the over usage of adult medication in our children. Unfortunately, there are small amounts of pediatric medications available for doctors to prescribe. I urge parents to investigate other treatments, i.e., non-medication treatments such as supplements from reliable sources and of course, better nutrition and eating habits.

According to a recent study published in Chest, the use of antibiotics in the first year of life is associated with an increased risk for asthma at age 7. Antibiotics destroy non only disease-causing microbes, but also those that are helpful to the developing immune system. At the end of the study, they found that the more frequent the antibiotic use, the higher the risk of asthma. Three to four courses of medicine conferred a 30 percent  and more than four courses of antibiotics increased the risk by almost 50 percent.

We must also consider the damage to vital organs at this young age. Most of us read about the side effects of the medications, but very few of us know or are even concerned about the nutrient depletion of the drug. In other words, what nutrients are medications taking out of my body? I personally consult and use several publications that give a list of the nutrients that are depleted when taking medications. In the case described here - antibiotics  - acidophilus, bifidus, and FOS are depleted. Please keep your children healthy and if they do have a sickness consider some safe alternative approach.

As always, I am committed your goood health.

GILL’S BREAKFAST

Posted October 10th, 2007 by Gill The Pill | Leave A Comment »

Many of you have asked what I have for breakfast.  Since my wife is from England, it starts with one cup of English breakfast tea. nothing added.  One cereal bowl full of, 1 banana, 1 tablespoonful of blueberries, 3 tablespoonfuls of real oat meal, 2 tablespoonfuls of: flax meal, whey powder, lecithin, pumpkin seeds.  Then 7-10 almonds, 2 tablespoonfuls of honey with the honey comb and 1 teaspoonful of cinnamon.  I use warm water to mix it up and sometimes I may add a little of the English tea if there’s any left, Windy loves her tea!  I may change the fruit  during the week from kiwi to peaches, or any fresh berry or fruit that’s available.  I want variety! Then one to two ounces of Monavie.  Later, one to two cups of BLACK coffee and 4 to 8 ounces of water. I don’t take alot of vitamins and supplements.  Only the supplements that I need.  I’m a runner, so I need glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM.  I’ll talk to you about that subject at another time.  I want you to eat things, Real, Raw, and Right! Just so you know, I’ve been eating this same thing for at least 40 years.  Don’t ask me if it works! Tell me when you want to GET WITH IT!! Improving your Health is my total commitment. Antioxidents

Antioxidants exist in your body and support your body in many different ways. Without them we become toxic. The free radicals cause havoc in our overall health. One product has emerged into the market place that will reduce or halt this process; a nutritional drink containing acai berry.

This nutritional drink is combined with 19 other fruits however the crown jewel in this drink is the Acai berry. For those of you who are not familiar with acai berry, this product has the highest antioxidant rating. Dr. Nicholas Perricone quotes “The acai berry is one of the most nutricious and powerful foods in the world, nature’s perfect energy fruit.”

As a runner I am searching for the product with the highest ORAC value (oxidative reduction absorption capacity). When I train I increase red blood cells which deliver oxygen to the muscle cells. These changes help make aerobic energy production more efficient. Aerobic energy production is the exclusive responsibility of the mitrochondria. With out the mitrocondria, the breakdown of fuels in the body and production of the ATP (adenosine triphosphate) depends on the action of protein molecules called enzymes. This acai berry drink is a “live” fruit drink contains these enzymes. Regular exercise increases the number of enzymes in the mitrocondria, allowing a faster conversion of nutrient fuels (carbs, fats, proteins, oxygen) into ATP. Your body burns these fuels to generate energy in the form of ATP for muscle contraction. ATP is the primary source of energy for ALL living cells.

Personal testimony - This nutritional drink containing acai berry has helped increase my running efficiency and my endurance. I have personally measured my performance over 37 years and this year I have reduced my 15K running time by 3 minutes and reduced “running pain” by 80%. As a pharmacy consultant I am experimenting positive results in my patients, i.e., reducing medications, decreasing pain and improving overall health.

Please call, come into the store or drop me a line if you would like more information on this product or any other health concern.

THYROID CARE

In 1924, iodine was added to common table salt to eliminate the problem of iodine deficiency.  It is a fact that more and more people are experiencing thyroid diseases.  Iodized table salt after being processed contains some aluminum and chemical residues. Sodium chloride (table salt) is a chemical comound made of sodium and chlorine. Chlorine competes directly with iodine for the iodine receptors in your thyroid and for that matter, throught-out the body. Iodine belongs to a class of elements known as “halogens”, which are all salt-like compounds.  Other halogens are bromine (bromide) and fluorine (floride). Floride taken internally has been associated with thyroid disorders for a long time and some researchers say that it is a cause of thyroid cancer and iodine deficiency. Did you know that chlorine is added to many  products that we consume daily? It is used in Sucralose (Splenda TM) as one example. We could go on and on about the uses of these elements.  I often am reminded of my years in pharmacy school when we were trying to memorize our work.  One of my favorites was the rhyme that we used for these “halogens”.  It goes something like this.  Chlorate he ate, chloride he died.  Bromate he ate bromide he died.  Fluorate he ate, flouride he died. So, when I buy some products made in the USA, I ALWAYS read the list of ingredients to see if I can spot the toxic (poison) ingredients.  I really try to keep my organs as free as possible of any and all toxins, especially my thyroid. We have numerous natural products to help improve your thyroid. Visit with me some time and I’ll try to help you with any of your health issues.  Happy Holidays and I wish you good health in the New Year!! As always, I am trying to improve your health, my total commitment.  Gill Weise, Pharmacist/Consultant, Naturally.
